At Chocorua Belgians, we believe in starting with honesty and clear communication about what to expect from a dog belonging to the working line Belgian Shepherd breed type. This includes working Belgian malinois and Belgian tervuren.
Bred for a Purpose
Belgian shepherds are genetically selected to be protective working dogs. They were developed for defense, service, and close partnership with humans. These traits are not “quirks” or “problems”—they are correct, intentional, and expected of dogs of this breed or breed type.
What this means in everyday life with a Belgian shepherd:
- Puppies bite—a lot. This is developmentally normal for the breed and won’t resolve with age alone. Are you prepared for a dog who loves to bite as part of their genetic drive? Do you know how to properly manage and channel puppy biting and then this drive to bite as a large, powerful, adult dog? While this drive can be properly directed, it will need an outlet.
- They’re intense, driven, and constantly seeking input. Without direction, they’ll make their own jobs. They will jump barriers, destroy household items, and in general be a difficult animal to live with or contain. They require daily activity, a safe-controlled environment, and training and exercises specific to their genetic drives such as tug and scent work.
- They are alert to everything, especially strangers and strange dogs. Most adult Belgian shepherds will not welcome unknown people or animals. They will see strange people and strange dogs as threats and act accordingly. You must be prepared for this behavior and not expect an adult dog to welcome pats or handling from strangers. This “fast twitch” behavior is extremely beneficial when using these dogs for security, working, or sport. But in everyday life it means a Belgian shepherd is lightning fast in their responses and quick to leap into action. They can act before their handler can think, you must learn to read your dog, and know your dog so you can manage him/her properly.
- They are loyal, sensitive, and protective. They are devoted to their owners, and love to work with them and be close. You must be aware of the genetic propensities purpose-bred into Belgian shepherds, and know your dog well, so that you can live with, manage, and train accordingly and with thoughtful care. They are the “hardest soft” dogs out there. Belgian shepherds learn very quickly — both the good and the bad— and don’t take well to harsh handling. They need firm, clear training, that respects the individual dog.
Handling and Relationship
Belgian Shepherds are emotionally intelligent dogs. They notice your tone, mood, and energy. They respond best to fair, clear guidance. Inconsistent or harsh handling can create confusion, conflict, or even physical pushback. These are not dogs that “shut down” under pressure—they may confront it with a correction of their own.
To thrive, they need:
- Daily mental and physical challenges
- A relationship built on clarity and mutual respect
- An active life where they are seen and used as a teammate and as part of your lifestyle
No Guarantees—Only Intention
At Chocorua Belgians, I strive to produce confident, socially neutral, stable dogs with good working drive, strong nerves, and a desire to engage with their people. But genetics are not a guarantee. Despite our best efforts, not every puppy will be the same—and we cannot predict every outcome. Keep in mind all of the expected, correct breed traits outlined above. None of these are “faults” these are correct and proper for a Belgian Shepherd.
Not for Everyone—And That’s Okay
This breed and breed type is not for every home or lifestyle. That’s just reality. If you are looking for a mellow, easy companion who doesn’t need constant guidance, structure, or challenge, there are many other truly wonderful breeds out there. I am happy to point you in the right direction.
If, however, you’re seeking a dog who will work with you, think alongside you, often outsmart you, challenge you, and commit deeply to your partnership—we’d love to continue the conversation.
